Your mission
As our technical lead for electric motors, you take full ownership of the custom BLDC and stepper motors that drive our space equipment: motorized valves and pressure regulators, pumps and compressors, and potentially actuators for robotic mechanisms. You take them from first-principles sizing through hands-on testing in our Munich lab to flight qualification. In detail you will:
- Technical Ownership: Act as deltaVision’s subject-matter expert for electric machines. Define motor topologies, drive design decisions with Design-to-Cost in mind and build up our long-term motor know-how.
- Electromagnetic & Thermal Sizing: Size BLDC and precision stepper motors from first principles and with numerical tools, from magnetic circuit and slot/pole selection to winding design and thermal budget. Turn repeated calculations into Python sizing tools.
- Extreme-Environment Design: Adapt motors to cryogenic temperatures and vacuum: magnetic material behaviour at low temperature, insulation integrity, cryogenic bearing lubrication and heat rejection without convection.
- Integrated Actuation: Package frameless stators and rotors directly into valve bodies, pump housings and mechanisms with our mechanical, systems and fluid engineers, and define drive and sensing requirements with our electronics team.
- Build & Process: Drive prototype builds with external winding and manufacturing partners and in-house (assembly, potting, sub-components), then turn what works into a controlled, repeatable process.
- Test & Qualification: Write test procedures and characterize your motors in our lab (back-EMF, cogging torque, torque-speed curves, step accuracy) through to qualification under cryogenic and vacuum conditions.
Your profile
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field, with a specialization in electrical machines.
- 3+ years of engineering experience in the electromagnetic and mechanical design of electric motors, ideally BLDC and stepper, including frameless and flanged configurations for integrated actuators.
- Hands-on experience with motor sizing and simulation tools (e.g. Motor-CAD, MotorXP, Ansys Maxwell, JMAG, FEMM) or your own Python-based analytical models.
- Good understanding of motor commutation, position sensing (Hall, resolver, encoder) and stepper drive behaviour.
- Practical knowledge of motor manufacturing: laminations, custom windings, magnet retention and bonding, insulation classes, encapsulation and process control.
- A hands-on mindset is mandatory: you inspect, assemble and troubleshoot hardware on the bench yourself, not only in simulation.
- Motivated, pragmatic and self-organized. You prefer “done” over “perfect on paper” and lead motor development independently across teams.
- Fluency in English; German is a plus.
What would make you stand out:
- Experience with motors or actuators for space, aerospace or other extreme environments (cryogenics, vacuum outgassing, vibration)
- Experience with motors or bearings operating at cryogenic temperatures
- Familiarity with motor drive electronics (e.g. field-oriented control, microstepping) and controller testing
- Experience with ECSS or comparable qualification frameworks
